Resource Center Library

Take a browse through a selection of books from my library, books that have been extremely valuable to my EF experience. They are listed by category and have a brief description of why I have found them to be valuable. They are hyperlinked to Amazon.com if you want any of them.

Battle/Campaign Histories

When Titans Clashed : How the Red Army Stopped Hitler by David M. Glantz & Jonathan M. House

Very interesting, very focused history of the war in the east.

Assault on Moscow 1941 by Werner Haupt

Detailed study of the drive on Moscow.

The Russo-German War, 1941-45 by Albert Seaton

Another excellent history of the entire war in the east. I couldn't decide which I liked better so I put them both down.

German Battle Tactics on the Russian Front 1941-1945 by Steven H. Newton

Exactly as titled. Very interesting!

Panzer Commander: The Memoirs of Colonel Hans Von Luck by Hans Von Luck

A good yarn from a guy who was always in the hot spots. Not great for battle info, but excellent background.

Panzer Battles by F. W. Von Mellinthin

Well written, easy read. Lots of info to pick battles to model. This is a really important view of the war, imho.

OOB / T,O&E Books

Handbook on German Military Forces by U.S. War Department

Excellent background on German T,O&E's in WW II.

US Army Handbook 1939-1945 by George Forty

Excellent T,O&E and Divisional sub-unit designations.

The Armies of Rommel by George Forty

Excellent histories with good T,O&E as well.

Panzertruppen : The Complete Guide to the Creation and Combat Employment of Germany's Tank Force 1933-1942 (Schiffer Military History) Vol. 1 ) by Thomas Jentz

Incredible details on how many and what kind of tanks fought with what division when. It also includes a decent bit of history and AAR info, but spotty in coverage.

Panzertruppen : The Complete Guide to the Creation and Combat Employment of Germany's Tank Force 1943-1945 (Schiffer Military History) Vol. 2 ) by Thomas Jentz

Later war version of the above. It is the same in all respects other than period covered.

Military Philosophy

Warfighting: Maneuver Warfare in the U.S. Marine Corps by H. T. Hayden(Editor)

Awesome book. FMF-1 is the best writing on 'Warfighting' in this century (imho). The other two sections are ok, but far from greatness. LTC Hayden's comments I would have paid extra to avoid. But FMF-1 is a "must read".

The Art of Maneuver : Maneuver-Warfare Theory and Airland Battle by Robert R. Leonhard

Great book. If you read one modern book on maneuver warfare, this should be it.

Maneuver Warfare; An Anthology by Richard D. Hooker(Editor)

Excellent anthology of recent thought on maneuver warfare. There are some very important essays here.

The Art of War by  Sun-Tzu, Samuel B. Griffith (Translator)

Must read.

On War by Carl Von Clausewitz

Must read.

Strategy by B.H. Liddell Hart

Important early work on maneuver warfare.

The Art of War by Antoine Henri Jomini

Another classic.

Military Misfortunes: The Anatomy of Failure in War by Eliot A. Cohen and John Gooch

Fascinating essay on how things go wrong when the shouldn't have. Very valuable in many areas as a checklist for three categories of things not to do.
